A stress test is done to detect heart diseases and to test the ability and tolerance of the human heart to handle work. As the body works harder, more blood has to be pumped to the heart. The test gauges the amount of blood supplied by the arteries to heart. It also determines the right kind and level of exercise a person should do.

The test is also known by many names, such as the following:

· Cardiac stress test
· Graded exercise test
· Exercise cardiac stress test
· Exercise electrocardiography
· Exercise treadmill test
· Physiological stress test
· Treadmill test

This type of test is administered by a physician for the following reasons:

· For diagnoses of heart-related ailments such as coronary artery disease or others caused by chest pain
· Determining the level a heart patient can exercise or do any other physical activity
· Prediction of risks of heart failure
· Check the efficiency of surgeries or procedures to aid the coronary artry circulation in patients

The examinee is to abstain from eating, drinking caffeine or alcohol, and smoking three hours prior to the test. All medications may be continued unless instructed otherwise. Loose clothing and comfortable clothes are to be worn during the test.

The stress test requires the examinee to do mild exercise while hooked up to an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG), a machine that monitors the heartbeat and heart waves. The wires or electrodes of the ECG are patched on to the chest, arms, and legs. The preparation of the electrodes may cause a mild stinging sensation.

The exercise is usually walking on a treadmill. The speed is increased and the treadmill is tilted, as if the examinee is walking up a small hill. The examinee may also be asked to breathe into a tube for a few minutes to measure the air exhaled. The ECG and tiredness will be monitored.

After the activity on the treadmill, the examinee will be asked to sit or lie down while their heart rate and blood pressure are checked.

Consult a doctor, a nurse, or other health care professionals before taking a stress test. If you feel you have a heart disease or if you have had a stroke, other members of your family might be at risk, too. A stress test can determine this, and thus will allow you to make changes to lower the risks.

People experience stress even once in their lives, but only a few know they are. Others are unaware that they are already facing a stressful situation. They do not recognize a stress symptom even if they look it in the eye, because they are too busy to notice that they have not slowed down and relaxed.

Stress usually affects emotions first. A few common symptoms are as follows:

· Anxiety, or the fight or flight response. When the body senses danger, it tenses up to either fight or run away.
· Nervousness, or jitteriness. A person’s psychological state is uneasy, and he/she is usually sensitive or highly strung.
· Restlessness, which is the inability to relax. Restless people lack patience and are very irritable, especially with anything or anyone who causes delays.
· Worries easily. A person can become paranoid or pessimistic when stressed out.

Too much stress can cause physical and psychological problems, too:

· Chest pain, due to a decrease of oxygen supply to the heart because of stress
· Depression, a mental condition caused by extreme sadness, loss of energy, and experiencing difficulty dealing with the events and situations of normal life
· Diarrhea, which is the fast and watery evacuation of waste
· Fatigue, a stress symptom brought on by restlessness. It is signaled by tiredness and loss of energy due to hard physical or mental work.
· Dizziness, a sensation of lightheadedness and imbalance
· Headaches or migraines, where migraines are headaches that involve throbbing head pain on both sides. Migraines precede nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to sound or light, and weakness.
· Hyperventilation, a result of heightened release of carbon dioxide along with excessive intake of oxygen. This disturbs the body’s acid base balance.
· Nausea, a sensation of stomach discomfort and unease, usually with an urge to vomit. Vomiting is the expulsion of undigested food through the mouth.

Learn stress management or stress relievers such as meditation, deep breathing, exercises, yoga, tai chi, listening to calming music, writing on a journal, taking a walk, curling up with a good book, or even laughing, to loosen up and relax.

If you notice a stress symptom that continues for a long time, notify a family member or your doctor immediately. Not all the symptoms are stress-related; some might hint at physical illnesses like heart disease and cardiovascular disorders. Your doctor may be able to diagnose and cure them, to save you from bigger problems and stress in the future. Prevention truly is better than cure.

With the hustle and bustle of modern life, stress is inevitable. From home, school, or work, everyone will encounter conflicts and stressful situations. Maintaining a healthy disposition is important, which is why there are various forms of stress relief to aid you.

Doing yoga, meditation, and other relaxation techniques for stress relief can greatly improve your physical and mental condition.

When you experience stress and anxiety, your heart rate increases, your muscles tense up, your breathing becomes shallow, and your immune and digestive system temporarily shut down. As a response, your body launches into the fight or flight mode.

To counter the body’s stress signals, you must learn the relaxation response, which is the opposite state of the body’s response to stress. When you have learned the relaxation response, your heart rate will decrease, your breathing will return to normal, your blood pressure will stabilize, and your muscles will relax.

Besides its calming effect, the relaxation response can also increase energy and focus, fight illness, and relieve aches and pains.

To achieve the relaxation response, you can do any of the following regularly: deep breathing, meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, tai chi, visualization, and yoga.

You need to be fully dedicated if you want to achieve the relaxation response for stress relief. Set aside enough time during the day for you to practice.

To practice properly, you will also need to find a quiet and peaceful corner, free from all interruptions or distractions. Perhaps you can lock your room, or sit in a garden or go outdoors. Just make sure the place is ideal for your relaxation practice.

When you have found the perfect spot, get into a comfortable position. Avoid lying down, if possible, so you won’t doze off in the middle of your exercise. Once you are comfortable, choose a word or a phrase that is meaningful to you and repeat that through the entire session. You may either focus on an object near you, or close your eyes.

Doing exercise to relieve stress is a good way of making the body produce endorphins, which is similar to opiates. Endorphins will make you feel good.

Perform the stress relief exercises as often as you can. If time or other circumstances don’t permit you, find another relaxing diversion instead like getting a massage or treating yourself to an aromatherapy bath. Do not allow stress to rule your life. Find time to relax, unwind, and take care of yourself.

Stress is in part caused by ineffective time management and lack of care for oneself. A person who knows how to juggle his/her activities and still have time for other things is one who can actually get the most work done and not blow up from all the pressure. To become more productive, here are simple tips for stress reduction.

· Delegate
If you are working in a team, share the workload with the rest for effective stress reduction. It is only fair for everyone to work on their share of the duty. If the task is not so important, you can either eliminate it or set it aside to be worked on later. If the task is too large and you still have another thing to do, you can work on both at a time until you get them done.

· Eat, sleep, and exercise
Do not skip any of the three meals of the day. Take naps, too, if you lack sleep. To keep fit and healthy, exercise. Take a break if you need to. Fresh ideas often come when we are not in full-battle mode.

· Know your limit
Before you take on more loads, check if you still have time and resources for it. If you’re too swamped or busy, it is alright for you to decline the task.

· Plan your day
Make a to-do list for the day ahead of you. Highlight important tasks so you don’t skip them or forget to do them. If you plan your day beforehand, going from place to place and jumping from one activity to another will be a whole lot easier than if you went with the day’s natural flow.

· Prioritize
Spend more time on important tasks than you would on ones that can be put off for later. If you finish the big assignments ahead of time, you won’t be as stressed anymore.

· Work on quality
Think quality over quantity. Do not rush your work. If you do, the product is likely to be erroneous, which means you will have to waste more time editing and changing it. It will also reflect better on you if you produce work that is correct, rather than submit many errors.

Putting too much pressure on yourself will not help you at all, but knowing how to reduce stress will help you cope with the pressure. All you have to do is manage your time well, and use your resources to your advantage.

Stress and anxiety often go hand-in-hand. While stress comes from frustration or anger towards certain points of a person’s life, anxiety is the fear and nervousness that accompanies that stress.

Stress is experienced by everyone. Sometimes, stress can be helpful because it is a source of motivation and productivity. But too much stress can cause illness, and other physical and psychological problems.

Anxiety is the fight or flight response that results from stress. It is the feeling you get when you are preparing your body to act against danger or run and escape from it. The symptoms of anxiety prepares you body to deal with threat.

In the face of danger or any other stressful situation, you body tenses up. Your breathing becomes faster and deeper, your heart beats quicker, you start to sweat, and you feel butterflies fluttering in your stomach. Anxiety often leaves you weak and shaky.

Other physical symptoms of stress and anxiety include abdominal pain, diarrhea, difficulty in swallowing, dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue, frequent need to urinate, headaches, insomnia, irritability, muscle tension, and twitching or trembling.

Emotional responses to stress and anxiety include the inability to concentrate, negative self-talk, and restlessness.

Since we cannot control the factors that contribute to stress and anxiety, we can lessen the pressure we feel.

· Relax and/or meditate. Find a quiet corner in your house at any convenient time and focus all your attention to your own happy place. Give yourself the chance to escape the busy lifestyle.
· Exercise. Jog around your block, or take up boxing. Vent all those frustrations on physical activities. Exercise also keeps your body fit and healthy.
· Eat and sleep well. Never skip meals or sleep. To continue working on through the day, your body will need energy. Eating a well-balanced diet will fuel your body while taking enough sleep will rejuvenate you.
· Take up a relaxing hobby. You have to take your mind away from stress now and then. Listen to soothing music or walk around the park.
· Control and lessen alcohol consumption and other vices. Drinking too much alcohol and smoking too many cigarettes will only aggravate anxiety disorders, and possibly give you bigger problems in the future.
· Think positive. Always have a positive outlook and never put yourself down. There is never a problem too big to conquer.

To control stress and anxiety, a person will need to know stress management, and follow that regime religiously.

Stress cannot be avoided in a fast-paced world, where deadlines seem to catch up on you while you are left wondering why time passed so quickly. To keep afloat in the busy modern world, here are techniques to managing stress:

· Autogenic training
Autogenic training is a relaxation technique for managing stress developed by Johannes Schultz, a German physicist. This technique is around 15 minutes long, and is usually done in the morning, at lunchtime, or during the evening.

The practitioner will chant a set of visualizations to induce a state of relaxation while lying down, or sitting in various meditation positions.

· Cognitive therapy
Cognitive therapy is a type of psychotherapy developed by Aaron T. Beck, a psychiatrist. Beck believed that the key to therapy was in the way his clients perceived and attributed meaning to their lives.

· Conflict resolution
Conflict resolution, a form of pacifism, is the attempt to resole a conflict or a dispute in a peaceful and amicable manner. The sides of each party are discussed until a unanimous resolution is at hand.

· Exercise
Physical exercise develops and maintains physical fitness and health. It also strengthens the cardiovascular system and the muscles, boosts the immune system, prevents heart diseases and obesity, and sharpens athletic skills. People who exercise a lot also have better mental health.

· Meditation
Meditation is a state of concentrated attention on a particular thought or awareness. Meditation heightens consciousness and can even raise a person’s threshold of shock and pain. Yoga and some forms of dances are examples of meditation.

· Music therapy
Listening to relaxing and soothing music can affect a person’s state of mind, similar to the way listening to rock music can make a person behave in erratic and often violent ways.

· Nootropics
Nootropics are known by many names. These include smart drugs, smart nutrients, cognitive enhancers, and brain enhancers. These drugs improve human cognitive abilities that have been impaired. Nootropics are made for therapeutic use only, and may not work if it taken while there is no bodily malfunction.

· Relaxation techniques—fractional relaxation, progressive relaxation, stress balls
Fractional relaxation is the release of muscle tension starting from a small part of the body at a time. An example of this is by flexing a finger, and continuing to flex until the hand, wrist, and arm.

Progressive muscle relaxation is a technique developed by Edmund Jacobson, an American physician. Certain muscles in the body are voluntarily relaxed to reduce anxiety.

Stress balls are small malleable toys meant to be squeezed by the hand and fingers to relieve stress and muscle tension.

· Sexual intercourse
A way to vent feelings and emotions is through sex, which is not only a form of human copulation, but is also now regarded as a way of expressing oneself.

· Time management
Time management is careful planning and organizing events for the day, or even the year, to avoid conflicts and overload of activities.

Managing stress requires dedication, if you do not want to be hassled and stressed out too much. Do not overload yourself with work and other activities; take a breather or go on vacation sometimes.

Various studies have been conducted to find the connection between illness and a person’s day-to-day activities. Simple events such as upcoming exams or meetings to grand events like weddings or funerals contribute to stress-related illnesses. The following is a list of the few leading causes of stress:

· Crimes
People who fall victim to burglary, robbery, mugging, sexual molestation or any other form of crime, is likely to be stressed out because of the trauma and shock experiences through the ordeal.

· Death
The loss of a loved one, a friend, or even a pet is devastating for any normal human being. People cling to each other, whether they know it or not. When a person dies, everyone who has had connection to him/her will feel the grief and stress of the loss.

· Family
Familiarity breeds contempt, and with contempt comes stress. Since a person is tied to his/her family, the family’s problems will often become his/her own, too. Divorces, marriages, pregnancies, illnesses and injuries, among others, are added to a list of problems a person is already carrying.

· Finances
Money always has a hand in every person’s problems, whether one owns it, lacks it, or invests it. Too many purchases and obligations to pay them is a problem for most people. Having to pay the mortgage, loans, bills, credit cards, and school fees can stress out a person, especially if finances are low or is nearing bankruptcy.

· Health and Safety
A person will always think about his/her personal welfare and well-being. Some problems stem from obesity, injuries, or vices such as smoking, alcohol, or drugs.

· Relationships
New or broken relationships, divorce, friendships, or marriage, demand time and emotions that can affect other facets of a person’s life. Investing emotions on another person and not having expectations met can lead to stress. Arguments and sexual problems caused by these relationships also play a role in causing stress.

· Work
Lack of sleep due to heavy work demand, high expectations, arguments with uncooperative co-workers, a nagging boss, and changes of work condition are examples of work-related problems that can be causes of stress.

Stress affects everyone, regardless of age, gender, or race. Even small things can turn into causes of stress—picking out the clothes to wear and the shoes to go with them, searching for a vacant seat in the bus, or even choosing food from a vending machine.

Since everyone experiences stress everyday, naturally we search for way to make ourselves feel better. The following is a short list of suggestions for stress treatment:

· Exercise
Exercise does not only include walking, running, or swimming, but also muscle stretching, and deep breathing. Exercise helps keep your body fit and healthy, and it produces hormones that contribute to a more positive outlook.

· Meditate
Let your mind rest. Look for a quiet and peaceful corner where you can sit down and relax. You can take up yoga, or tai chi, which is a form of martial arts that require much grace and balance. Focus all your energy and mind into one object or to nothingness, even for a while. You will find that you will be more relaxed after meditation.

· Reduce your intake of the following:
- Sugar, because it can rob the body of nutrients. Even artificial sweeteners can cause health problems and anxiety.
- Processed food, because refined food can also take the vitamins and minerals meant for the body. Instead of processed food, buy fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat.
- Instant food, because they contain lots of artificial flavors, monosodium glutamate (MSG), preservatives, and saturated fat.
- Caffeinated products such as chocolate, coffee, tea, sodas, and some medication. Caffeine is a stimulant, which means it can produce or aggravate insomnia and anxiety. If your medication contains caffeine, ask your doctor for alternatives.

· Self hypnosis
You will be inducted into a hypnotic state. The hypnotist will the make positive therapeutic suggestions that are meant to influence the subconscious. When the hypnotist is done, you will be suggested to return to consciousness or awareness. Since the hypnotist made suggestions to your subconscious, you will find yourself applying those suggestions in your life.

· Take medication
A doctor may prescribe medications to a patient with stress and anxiety. There are anti-anxiety medications that can help you relax and calm down. These medications are not meant for long-term use, though, because of risks of abuse or side effects.

· Therapy
Some people see a therapist to help them cope with stress and anxiety through talking and listening. Other times, you may also be asked to do deep breathing or small, easy exercises to help you loosen up and relax. Counseling is an effective stress treatment, although it requires a lot of time and dedication.

There are many methods of stress treatment, so be sure to choose one that will work best for you.

Stress is defined as the state resulting from person-environment transaction that makes a person identify an inconsistency between the demands of a circumstance and a person’s biological, psychological, or social systems resources. Medically speaking, stress would be the disturbance of homeostasis due to physical or psychological stimuli such as shock or injury. This disturbance can produce mental or physiological reactions that can lead to illness. Stress can be caused by experiences perceived differently by different people. To not get caught up with stress, a person needs to know stress management, which is the ability to identify stress factors and learning how to cope with them.

Stress management includes techniques and methods that will enable a person to effectively deal with psychological stress.

People deal with stress in their own ways. Time management, learning to say “No” to some demands, and setting limits, are examples of stress management. Other methods include the following:

· Autogenic training, a relaxation technique that is similar to yoga and meditation
· Biofeedback, a relaxation technique that uses physical signals to help change body reactions to those signals
· Cognitive therapy, a form of therapy that stems from the belief that emotional conflicts are results of irrational and habitual forms of thinking
· Conflict resolution, the ending of a disagreement or a dispute
· Exercise, which not only maintains and improves personal health and fitness, but also promotes weight loss
· Meditation, a state of concentration attention on an object of thought, awareness, or the mind itself

· Nootropics, or smart drugs or smart nutrients, substances that improve the capacities and functions of the brain
· Relaxation techniques, which include fractional and progressive relaxation, and stress balls
· Sexual intercourse, or coitus, the human form of copulation, is also an expression of love or intimacy
· Talking therapy, which is talking about feelings regarding relationships and other issues to another person or a psychologist

Stress can also be measured through various ways. The Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale rates stressful events in a person’s life through numbered scales for adults and minors. The added result will determine if the person is in risk of stress-related illness or not. Blood pressure changes and galvanic skin response can be measured, too. The fight or flight response, which draws blood away from extremities, can be evaluated using a digital thermometer for the skin.

The whole point of stress management is to allow a person to deal with day-to-day activities in a wholesome, healthy, non self-destructive way.
